The Pasar at Buitenzorg

As a colonial power, the Netherlands is concerned to consolidate its grasp on the entire Indonesian archipelago. A new act of parliament offers greater opportunities for agricultural enterprise in the Dutch East Indies. Around 1900, a new 'ethical policy' is introduced, directed at educating the indigenous population and giving them greater responsibility for their own economic and political affairs.
